Phil Vinson, 1958

Phil Vinson, 1958 graduate of Poly High, has written a memoir about growing up in Fort Worth during the 1940s and ‘50s. The book was published in July of 2005 by VBW Publishing of College Station, Texas.
The book, Ink in the Blood, traces Vinson’s life and adventures as he grows up in a family or journalists. He became a journalist himself and covered the biggest news story of his generation: the assassination of President Kennedy in 1963.
He retired in May 2005 from the journalism faculty at the University of Texas at Arlington.
About 50 people attended a book signing for Vinson at Borders Books and Music at I-30 and Hulen on Saturday, Sept. 3.  Poly exes Johnny Samaras, Bob Newton and Delmus Kelley attended the signing.
The book contains several chapters about life at Poly in the fifties, including stories about teachers Mary Tener, Martha Rawdon, Kelly B. Adair, Dorothy Estes, John Hill, and the coaching staff. Vinson shares many humorous anecdotes about Poly students and the trials and tribulations of adolescence during the “easy years.”
If you think you’d be interested in the book, you can read excerpts and reviews at Vinson’s website: www.philvinson.com
